What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) describes the procedures involved in combating morbid obesity via alteration of the gastrointestinal tract.  It is increasingly used in the cases of patients who have tried other weight loss regimes and have failed to sufficiently reduce their body weight to acceptable levels. Dr. Chang and Dr. Cheregi are at the forefront of leading Advanced Bariatrics as the premier bariatric surgery program in northern Illinois.

Anyone considering weight loss surgery should have a thorough understanding of the potential benefits and risks of the surgical options available. In addition, it is important that patients have a complete understanding of the commitment to the lifestyle changes that will be necessary following surgery. The free informational sessions offered by Advanced Bariatrics are designed to provide detailed information to anyone considering weight loss surgery.

At Advanced Bariatrics, Dr. Cheregi and Dr. Chang perform the following minimally invasive bariatric surgical procedures:

Gastric Sleeve surgery
(Sleeve Gastrectomy)

+ Average weight loss is 40-70% of Excess Body Weight (EBW).

Gastric Sleeve surgery, or a gastric sleeve gastrectomy, is a laparoscopic surgical procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15%-20% of its original size through the removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature.

SADI-S surgery

(Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy)

+ Average weight loss is 50-80% of Excess Body Weight (EBW).

Combining the best aspects of the gastric bypass and gastric sleeve, patients feel fuller longer because the majority portion of the stomach that generates ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates hunger, is removed. In addition, by bypassing the first part of the small intestine, optimization of blood sugar levels is more easily achieved.

Gastric Bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y)

+ Average weight loss is 50-80% of Excess Body Weight (EBW).

Gastric Bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y surgery) is considered the ‘Gold Standard’ of all bariatric surgical procedures.
