My Journey
Before my surgery, I weighed 223 pounds and was absolutely miserable. I had very few friends because I felt so uncomfortable talking to new people for the fear of judgment about my weight. I always felt like the “fat girl” in the room. I was not in a good place mentally. Not only was my mental health being affected by my weight but also my physical health. While attending community college, I found it difficult to walk from class to class and would be out of breath just walking up a single flight of stairs.
Fast forward to today, I weigh 135lbs; and I am an undergraduate student at Illinois State University. Now, getting to class entails a mile-long walk; and I can walk that mile at a brisk pace and feel absolutely fine. Transferring schools meant meeting a lot of new people. This is something I always was afraid about; but with my confidence being much higher, I was able to make new friends and join clubs. Making friends and getting involved is something I would have never done before my surgery.
During the entire process, Dr. Cheregi had been and continues to be absolutely amazing. He has the best bedside manner I have ever experienced. Luckily, my mom was able to go through this journey with me and also had Dr. Cheregi as her surgeon. My mom and I joke that we wish he could be our primary care physician. I honestly look forward to going to my yearly follow up appointments. Dr. Cheregi is so much more than just a surgeon to me, he is there to help with any issues that come up. I am so grateful for Dr. Cheregi and for everything he has done for me. He truly changed my life.
